When
dressing for winter, it’s all about layers.
It’s essential that your first layer fits snugly, and that all
other layers fit close together to effectively wick moisture away from
your skin. As the moisture works its way through each layer, ultimately
evaporating, you’ll be kept dry and warm.
UPPER
BODY:
Layer One - Wicking -
You will still
sweat, even if it’s below zero, so look for synthetic fibers such as
acrylic or any of the new high-tech blends. Avoid cotton, as it just
soaks up moisture, keeping it close to your skin and making you cold.
Layer Two - Warming -
Stay insulated
with a light fleece, zipped-jacket that can absorb any remaining
moisture from layer one, and be easily removed during the walk, should
it seem less cold outside than it did when you left home.
Layer Three - Wind
& Water - To protect yourself from the elements,
choose a light, zipped shell made from resistant materials such as
nylon or Gore-Tex®.
HANDS:
Gloves/Mittens -
Heat loss through the
extremities is more pronounced with the addition of dumbbells. For
temperatures still above zero, gloves with added warmth, such as
Thinsulate™ should do the trick. When the temperature dips below zero,
mittens with a protective nylon or Gore-Tex®
barrier are a must to keep
the heat that radiates between the fingers in, and the wind and snow
out.
BUTT:
Underwear -
Don’t laugh! This layer is
just as important as all the others, if not more. Because when even the
hottest shower can’t warm up your butt, then it’s time to dress it
accordingly with a Butt Warmer. This wicking underwear is seamless for
comfort, and fits like a boy-short for complete coverage.
LEGS:
Pants -
Since the legs tend to stay warmer, choose just a single layer of
either running tights or pants made from synthetic materials. On those
really cold days when the wind is whipping through your legs, consider
a shell layer similar to your third layer of upper body dressing.
FEET:
Socks - Look
for synthetic materials,
such as acrylic or COOLMAX® that are known
for wicking away moisture
to keep you dryer and fend off blisters. Avoid cotton, but if natural
fibers are your thing, wool also works to keep feet warm and dry.
Running Shoes -
Always wear a good
pair of shoes that offer support and comfort. In the colder weather,
just be mindful that the more mesh there is, the more the cold air and
wetness can get in. Ensure also, that the treads are in good condition
to keep you grounded if it gets slippery.
HEAD:
Hats - Heat
is
lost through the head,
so again, a hat with a synthetic lining to wick away sweat is best. In
addition, a wool or waterproof outer-layer will keep the heat in, and
the snow out. Finally, make sure your hat provides coverage for your
ears.
Headbands -
If
hats don’t suit you, look for a headband with similar qualities to the
hats.
WHAT TO
WEAR - Any Time of Year!
Before you leave for class, check these items off your list and get the
most out of your Tread Powerfully™ workout!
- Good pair of well maintained walking or running
shoes that offer
comfort and support, in addition to gripping treads to avoid slipping
Did you know that running shoes should be
replaced every 100-150 hours of use?
- Water bottle and water belt that fits snugly
around waist, or other method for carrying water
Ask Sue where she gets her water belt!
- Comfortable, layered clothing that allows heat
to escape and is weather appropriate.
For tips on winter dressing, see above.
- A pair of 1, 2 or 3lb. dumbbells*
Tread Powerfully™
participants are required to supply their own dumbbells
*Don’t have any dumbbells yet? Although the use of
dumbbells will
help make the most of your TP workout, participants can still enjoy the
class without them. It is also recommended that if you suffer from any
kind of shoulder or neck pain, you opt out of using dumbbells.
